If you’ve ever tried running full speed up and down a soccer field with a few extra pounds weighing you down, you know the struggle is real. Losing weight to get in shape for soccer — or any sport — can feel like climbing a mountain, but it doesn’t have to be a soul-crushing grind. In fact, with the right approach, you can shed those extra pounds and actually feel stronger, faster, and, dare I say it, happier in the process.

Here are five ways to drop that weight, get fit, and stay in the game (without hating life along the way):

1. HIIT It Hard (But Not Too Long)

I know, I know. You’ve heard this before: “Try High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)!” But trust me, this stuff works — and you don’t even have to spend hours doing it. HIIT is all about short bursts of all-out effort followed by a quick recovery. You’ll burn calories like crazy, and the best part? You’re done in 20–30 minutes. That’s like the length of a Netflix episode — except instead of sitting on the couch, you’re burning fat and getting faster.

Try sprint intervals, jump squats, or even burpees (I know, they’re evil, but they work). Your heart rate will soar, you’ll feel like a beast, and you’ll get fit without living at the gym.
